Breastfeeding helps build the bond between mother and baby however we understand breastfeeding can come with its struggles and that you may require a helping hand along the way. That help comes from an Lactation consultant who is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

The New Mummy Co has a team of IBCLC Lactation Consultants across Toronto and the wider greater Toronto area. In B.C. our LC is based in Surrey. We understand the requirement for an LC is normally urgent and we endeavor to support you the same or next day where possible.

Common Reasons for Requiring a Lactation Consultant:

• You are concerned about low milk supply
• Overabundant milk supply
• You feel your baby is not getting enough milk
• You are having issues with latching and positioning
• You have painful or cracked nipples
• You suspect your baby is tongue-tied
• You have pumping concerns
• Your baby does not latch onto your breast
• Your baby has not regained birth weight at 2 weeks
• You have any other breastfeeding concerns

What to Expect from your Lactation Consultant

Our team of lactation consultants will visit your home to provide a 90-minute initial consult to support you with any breastfeeding issues. The consultant will observe your baby feed for information or cues on how the baby is breastfeeding. Our lactation consultants will provide you with practical advice on latching, positioning, and how the baby is reacting to the breast. Most importantly our lactation consultants are there to support and empower you in a non-judgmental way. Breastfeeding is a new skill and can take some time so we will provide advice in a kind and caring way to ensure you are comfortable with any changes to your breastfeeding approach.

Preparing for Your Lactation Consultant to Visit

It is important to have all items necessary for feeding ready to go. If your baby has required a supplement make sure you have this prepared prior to the visit. Most importantly, if your baby is hungry prior to arrival then let them feed a small amount to satiate them until the lactation consultant arrives. It’s best to have baby want to feed during the LC’s visit to ensure that you get the best from her visit with you.

You are encouraged to ask questions and share concerns and it would be useful for you to have a list of questions you would like answered during the visit. It may also be helpful to have any weights for your infant available in kilograms or grams and know how often your baby is feeding and how many wet and dirty diapers they have had over the last 24 – 48 hours.

How will the Lactation Consultant Support me During an Appointment?

During the initial visit, the lactation consultant will review your pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding history to assess your concerns and explore any issues you may be having with the breastfeeding journey depending on the issue at hand, the lactation consultant will gently examine your breasts and your baby’s anatomy and sucking ability. Your baby may be weighed as needed.

You will be invited to feed your baby during the visit so that the lactation consultant can observe positioning and latch and see what is happening. The lactation consultant will work with you to create a care plan that suits your needs with suggestions for improving the breastfeeding issues you may be experiencing. Their goal is to provide you with tips and tools to help you and your baby breastfeed more easily and achieve your breastfeeding goals.

The lactation consultant may teach you how to hand express and observe a brief pumping to check for correct flange fit and pump settings as needed.

After the visit, relevant literature and resources may be provided for your reference. You may also be provided with suggested referrals to other health care providers if necessary. A report will be sent to the other members of your health care team when necessary.  A follow-up text will be provided within 24 hours of the visit and you are strongly encouraged to arrange further follow-up with New Mummy Co until you feel fully confident in your breastfeeding journey are enjoying feedings!
